Dél - Tirol nem először vált csatatérré.
1915-ben Olaszország belépett a világháborúba és támadást indított Tirol és a Brenner-hágó megszerzésére.
A völgyeket az osztrák–magyar hadvezetés kiürítette, a védelmet a hegyi erődökbe vonták vissza.
A Col di Lana és a szomszédos Monte Sief tetején épült erődített állásokat a német alpesi hadtest (Deutsches Alpenkorps) és osztrák egységek ellenőrizték védték, ellenőrizve a Falzarego-hágóra, nyugaton a Pordoi-hágóra és a Campolungo-hágóra menő utakat.
A Col di Lana elleni olasz támadások sorra kudarcba fulladtak, ezért az olasz utászok robbantójáratokat fúrtak a hegy oldalába.
1916. április 17-ről 18-ra virradó éjszakán a Col di Lana csúcsát lerobbantották az osztrák védőállásokkal együtt, ennek következtében az osztrákok a hegy feladására kényszerültek.

South Tyrol did not become a battlefield for the first time.
In 1915, Italy entered the World War and launched an attack on the Tyrol and the Brenner Pass.
The valleys were emptied by the Austrian-Hungarian commanders, and the defense was taken back to the mountain fortresses.
The fortified posts built on the top of Col di Lana and the neighboring Monte Sief were guarded by the German Alps Corps (Deutsches Alpenkorps) and Austrian units, inspecting the Falzarego Pass, the Pordoi Pass in the West and the Campolungo Pass.
The Italian attacks against Col di Lana failed a lot, so Italian lizards drove blasting to the side of the mountain.
On the night of April 17, 1816, the peak of Col di Lana was eroded along with the Austrian defense stations, and the Austrians were forced to give up the mountain.
